How the Chesterton House Foundation is Supporting Firfield Primary School

Firfield Primary School is turning outdoor space into part of everyday learning, giving children room to explore, garden, and simply be outside.

The Chesterton House Foundation has awarded Firfield Primary School a £500 grant, supporting a new school allotment and the school’s growing outdoor learning curriculum.

Learning outdoors, from Reception to Year 6

Firfield’s Reception children and a group of SEND pupils in Year 6 have already begun outdoor learning as the school works towards becoming a Forest School. The grant will fund gardening tools sized for children, including wheelbarrows, watering cans, and trowels, along with bug houses, magnifying glasses, and binoculars to encourage bird watching. A mud kitchen will give younger pupils space to explore and experiment.

As well as the allotment, the school is re-establishing a memorial garden for a former pupil who died thirty years ago, having recently reconnected with his family. The school has also been building closer ties with its local community, holding several community “big digs” over the past six months, and working with a local preschool to use the outdoor space too.

The Foundation looks for organisations doing meaningful work in our local community, where funding makes a direct and visible difference. Firfield’s plans give children genuine, hands-on time outdoors, while bringing the wider community together around shared green space — exactly the kind of grassroots project we want to back.
