How the Chesterton House Foundation is Supporting Allexton Community Nursery

There’s something special about children growing their own food, then watching it turn up on the table. Allexton Community Nursery is building a space where that happens, right on their doorstep.

The Chesterton House Foundation has awarded Allexton Community Nursery CIC a £500 grant, supporting a new community allotment where children grow food for the local community, alongside a sensory garden designed to bring nature closer to daily nursery life.

A garden built for the senses

The sensory garden will include a variety of plants, wind chimes, and insect-friendly habitats to attract pollinators, giving children a hands-on way to explore the natural world. A water butt will help conserve rainwater for watering the plants, keeping the whole space sustainable.

Allexton has been supporting local children and families in the west end of Leicester since 2001, becoming a Community Interest Company in 2023 to strengthen its fundraising and expand community support. The allotment project has already secured funding from Tesco, the Lord Mayor, and the Co-op for building work, plants, seeds, and compost. The Foundation’s grant will cover the finishing touches: bug habitats, bird feeders, herbs, and sensory plants.

The finished space is set to open to the community at Allexton’s Summer Fayre on 28th June 2026.
