What does “Certified Financial Planner™” mean?

The Certified Financial Planner (CFP) accreditation is recognised globally as the “gold standard” for financial planning professionals.

It is awarded by the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) and is only granted where the holder can demonstrate they meet rigorous international competency, ethical and professional practice standards.

About Andy

Andy founded Chesterton House in 1987 with a simple but powerful belief: that great financial planning should help people live better lives. Over more than three decades, he has shaped the firm’s philosophy, its approach to client relationships, and the values that still guide everything we do today.

Though Andy is no longer authorised to provide financial advice, he remains very much part of the firm as Chairman, supporting the team and helping to steer the direction of the business. He’s also a keen writer and speaker on financial wellbeing and personal development — areas he’s passionate about and that sit right at the heart of what Chesterton House is all about.

Qualifications

Certified Financial Planner
A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) is a financial professional who has met rigorous standards in education, experience, and ethics. The CFP certification is recognised globally as the gold standard for financial planning professionals, reflecting their expertise in managing investments, retirement, estate planning, taxes, and insurance while always acting in their clients' best interests.
Chartered FCSI (Financial Planning)
A Chartered FCSI (Financial Planning) is a prestigious designation awarded to financial planning professionals who have achieved the highest standards in education, experience, and ethical practice. This certification, recognised globally, signifies exceptional expertise in providing comprehensive financial advice and planning, ensuring clients receive top-tier, trustworthy guidance for their financial goals.
ACII (Associateship)
Associate members are those who have gone on to secure more advanced qualifications by completing the Advanced Diploma in Insurance or its predecessor the Associateship. This shows a commitment to continuous professional development.
FPC (Financial Planning Certificate)
A recognition offered by the Chartered Insurance Institute in the United Kingdom. Individuals who hold this qualification have satisfied coursework and testing requirements set by the organisation.
AFPC (Advanced Financial Planning Certificate)
To have completed this qualification, individuals were required to obtain three units. These could have been selected from any combination of the available units at that time but must have included the compulsory G10 unit - Taxation and Trusts.
DipPFS (Diploma in Financial Planning)
This level 4 diploma meets the FCA’s qualification requirements for retail investment advisers, demonstrating core technical knowledge and financial planning capabilities across six core areas.
CertCII (Life and Pensions) Certificate in Financial Planning (Life & Pensions route)
The life and pensions route builds knowledge and understanding of the sector’s role and its activities. It considers important customer needs, solutions and products, and how individuals and organisations work within the regulatory and legislative environment.
Level 3 Award in Long Term Care Insurance
This level 3 award develops the knowledge and understanding of long-term care cover, including legal, taxation and regulatory issues and the responsibilities of local authorities.
